LIFE IN BARB'S KITCHEN

This cookbook is dedicated  to Nanny.

She was my inspiration and teacher in the kitchen.

Disaster frequently followed her in the kitchen, but she always made sure her family sat down to a delicious three course meal every night.

I also have to acknowledge my Grandma Ida Builder who was an amazing cook. I remember her making blintzes in our small Glen Oaks apartment.

The crepes(bletels) would be spread out all over the kitchen.  I only wish I had learned to make her challah.

Favorite Nanny remembrances in the Kitchen

1- She and Poppy arriving from Florida before a holiday with frozen brisket  and kugel wrapped up in newspaper and aluminum foil to keep it fresh.

2-Pins or other odds and ends found in our soup.

3- Our kitchen was so small, that when she opened the oven it would burn my dad’s  back since the table went right up to the stove.

4- The first time Alan came to dinner, Nanny set up a nice table for us to eat at in the living room. She was walking around filling everyones glass with water from a pitcher.

Even though he had been warned by Jane that this might happen, Alan was still surprised when she spilled the pitcher of water all over him.

Above (or below) is a photo of
Grandpa Max Steinfink-standing outside his Kosher butcher shop on the Lower East Side.He ran this shop for 50 years. I was born across the street and remember spending more time than I liked in the shop. There was sawdust on the floor, and I remember them plucking the feathers out of the chickens. I remember the odors and the blood. No wonder I burn my meat!
